SMALL SPACES: WHAT TO DO AND NOT TO DO. – BY Architect Arisai Rodriguez Fernandez RETURN TO BLOG
It is true that most people around the world live in small apartments around 30 m² and so is that there are a series of suggestions that designers dictate to create an amplitude effect inside spaces.
1. SAY YES TO LIGHT
Use indirect light to frame walls or ceilings through a LED string or recessed lights, the ones with simple and elegant designs are perfect. Or you can also use direct light that bring uplight and downlight by being arranged in a hallway in a harmonious way to emphasize a space and give it verticality. These ones are your optimal choice and look really good.
2. SAY NO TO DARK COLORS
It is known that color black shortens but that’s not what we are looking for our home. Choose a light color palette for finishings and for your floor, rectified tiles in big formats to help you keep the continuity effect; for ceilings choose reflective colors.
3. DO NOT ADD WEIGHT
Walls with heavy textures are pretty but walls with light textures make the room look wider. Smooth finishings with neutral and simple details are your best option but if you decide to add a decorative band to your walls, we recommend you to choose geometrical ones, small square tiles in the same range of colors arranged vertically are a way to visually widen up your space while horizontally lines shorten it.
4. SAY YES TO MULTITASK FURNITURE
When your space is small you have to make the most of each centimeter. Look for furniture that could diversify its use to make things easier for you.
5. HANG UP YOUR TV
Thanks to the development of technology and the appearance of digital platforms that allow you to watch an endless number of movies and get wrapped up with a great tv show, we don’t need the enormous tv furniture where you used to keep all your dvd’s and karaoke cd’s, so say goodbye to the big TV set and say hello to the tiltable holders, Netflix and YouTube.
6. DO NOT HAVE A DEAD SPOT
Use every single corner of your home to keep whatever you need, like underneath your stairs, bed or sink.
7. SAY YES TO A PHANTOM DRESSING ROOM
The doors of your dressing room shouldn’t necessarily be more striking than your walls. Forget the excessive moldings and huge sliders. Prefabs closets with unnoticed doors are your best option, plus these ones adapt perfectly to any remodeling or style change inside your apartment and never get old.
8. SAY YES TO ORDER
When you live at a small space, order should be your best ally. You will not want to pass through an extreme loop of mountains of clothes before living your house.
9. USE SLIDING DOORS
